Art School 101: Art University – Should I do an arts degree?

class
As it’s that time of year, I thought it might be quite useful for some of you if I wrote about my experiences of arts education. As the fees are now averaging £9000 a year, going to do an art degree might seem like a huge risk financially and something that you might want to consider very carefully. Questions you might be asking yourself: will I get a well paid job at the end of it? Will I even get a job at all!? Is it worth it? What will I learn – if anything?!

When I went to university the fees were still around £3000 a year, so the loan didn’t seem as big as £9000 a year. I imagine with any degree now at such high costs, a lot of people will be contemplating even going ahead with a degree at all, especially an art degree.

There is SO much to cover, so I’ll try to write a couple of posts over the next few weeks. In this first post, I’ll highlight a couple of things you may want to initially think about before starting your course. I hope this will be of help to someone! I’ve also fished out lots of my old illustration work that I made on my degree (the fun – omg so much bad photoshopping!) so all photos/drawings on these posts are from my time studying.

Grab a cup of tea… this isn’t short!

My blog has had a makeover!

ipadandiphonepeachlogo
In case you haven’t spotted already, I gave my blog a makeover! Woohoo! I’d wanted to do it for a while as I had the previous one for almost 2 years and was so bored of it/it felt quite template-y as there was not much customization really.

Design wise I have been making various mock ups for a couple of weeks of what I wanted it to look like, but could not get it quite right. I find design for web quite hard – it needs a lot of practice to be good at it!wipAnyway, I spent a lot of time this week on the design and it all started coming together. YAY! Then it was on to actually building it…

Illustrations for Boden – Johnnie B t-shirts for AW14′ out now!

unicorndaddyboden50sdoggy-2

I am so excited! This week two of the t-shirts I designed for Boden were released in their Johnnie B AW14′ range! You can buy them HERE. (Age 16 is about an adult size 10/12!). The dog and the unicorn were illustrated by me. I am so happy they released the unicorn design as that was my favourite that I did for them. I did 4 other designs too, so perhaps they will be released at some point in the future. Above are some of the original drawings, hope you like them!

My work space/desk! – A peek into my home.

mydesk
I love seeing other people’s work areas/desks/studios/bedrooms, so here are some photos of mine. I was asked to do this a few weeks ago for a friends website, and only got round to it so thought I’d post them here too!
I don’t have a studio or a spare room to work in (London rent is already bloody enough) so use half my bedroom as a working area for my illustration work/drawing/photoshop marathons. I LOVE toys.. and do collect them. I have a few vintage Fisher Price wheeled animals and lots of Lapin & Me toys as I’ve drawn them quite a lot for the shop in the past year. pens
light kewpie
I found this Kewpie in a bin on Kingsland Road! Haha, I did have to wash it a lot, god only knows what it was covered in… The silver lamp above is Ikea and I love it.

I do try and change the pictures here up a bit, I don’t tend to put much illustration up as I prefer photos, paintings or bits of design (doing illustration kind of makes you sick of looking at other illustration and I also think it’s best if you don’t!). But I do have some vintage illustration bits up, alongside two recent artists Nathalie Lete and Yoshitomo Nara because they are two of my all time favourites. Also I’ve got a few bits of Ana Albero’s work stuck up, an illustrator from Berlin who’s work I really like.pink
A cute little pen I got from Berlin & below some MT tapes. (I LOVE STATIONARY, especially Japanese!). tape

So there we go, where I spend quite a bit of time! I hope you liked this sneaky peek of my flat!
